While there is a wealth of academic research on competing mathematical definitions of fairness, the broader ethical and rights-based discourse prioritizes a general understanding of fairness that encompasses both substantive and procedural dimensions.
Key Aspects:
- Equitable Treatment: Fairness requires that AI systems treat all individuals without unjust discrimination based on characteristics such as race, gender, nationality, age, political beliefs, or religion. This principle is particularly important when it comes to marginalized or disadvantaged populations, ensuring that AI systems do not exacerbate existing inequalities.
- Substantive Fairness: This dimension of fairness pertains to the outcomes generated by AI systems. It ensures that these systems avoid bias, prevent discrimination, and strive for just treatment of all individuals.

Challenges:
- Competing Definitions: The challenge of defining fairness mathematically in AI models remains a major point of debate in academia. Various formalizations may conflict, depending on the context or application.
- Data Biases: AI systems are only as fair as the data used to train them. Biased or unrepresentative data can lead to unfair outcomes, making fairness difficult to achieve without careful data auditing and management.
Future Directions:
As AI continues to permeate various aspects of society, ongoing research will focus on refining definitions and methods for ensuring fairness in AI systems. This includes developing techniques to detect and address biases in training data and ensuring that AI systems are transparent, contestable, and just in their decision-making processes.
