Honors Workshop: Responsible AI

Sponsored by the Rutgers Honors College, Dr. Nathan C. Walker offered a workshop for honors students to think about responsible uses of artificial intelligence. After all, AI has dramatically transformed, for better or worse, nearly every sector of society. Education, in particular, is struggling to redefine itself in the age of AI while businesses rapidly adopt new technologies, introducing new efficiencies while raising critical ethical questions about bias and job security. The entertainment industry faces hard questions about copyright and human expression, while AI allows anyone to be a filmmaker, musician, or author. The 2024 Nobel prizes in physics, chemistry, and economics went to AI researchers, while other researchers are showing AI’s discriminatory effects on vulnerable populations.

Whether using AI for self-driving cars, mass government surveillance at the Olympics, autonomous weapons systems in war, or disrupting elections with deepfakes, the recent boom in artificial intelligence requires every citizen from every corner of the world to grapple with the moral implications of what could be the most significant technological advancement in our lifetimes. Join Dr. Nathan C. Walker, principal investigator at Rutgers University’s AI Ethics Lab, for an engaging event about how the AI4Good and Responsible Tech movements are working to ensure AI’s potential is harnessed for the benefit of humanity and the environment.
