The Rutgers AI Ethics Exchange is a university-wide, multidisciplinary research network that explores the ethical, legal, social, and educational impacts of artificial intelligence.

Convened by the AI Ethics Lab at Rutgers-Camden, the Exchange creates a collegial environment for participants to share emerging research, discuss scholarly articles and public events, exchange resources, and engage in interdisciplinary dialogue about responsible technology across disciplines and societal sectors. It is a structured, interdisciplinary professional development environment that complements and strengthens the objectives of postdoctoral training.

Eligibility

The AI Ethics Exchange convenes full- and part-time faculty, staff, researchers, librarians, and visiting scholars at Rutgers University. The Exchange is intentionally interdisciplinary and welcomes participants from the humanities, social sciences, health sciences, professional schools, libraries, administration, and technical fields. (Undergraduate and graduate students interested in these topics are encouraged to apply to serve as research assistants at the AI Ethics Lab or to enroll in one of its courses.)

2026-2027 Schedule

Meetings occur from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM on the first and third Fridays of each month during the fall and spring semesters. Roles & Responsibilities

The Exchange is a self-governing collaborative space for members to present ideas to one another and take turns presenting and hosting the hybrid and virtual convenings.

Members receive the benefit of being listed as Contributors on the AI Ethics Lab website and the ability to list the Exchange on their CV as university service or on an NIH training grant. Members contribute to the lab’s values-based culture, respect the developmental nature of the Exchange, and treat works in progress with professional discretion. Members are encouraged to participate regularly to help sustain the collegial and collaborative nature of the Exchange; those who anticipate missing more than two meetings in an academic year are encouraged to reconsider whether active membership aligns with their commitments.

Presenters benefit from a collegial support system to work through ideas by sharing a brief, informal, accessible, and discussion-oriented presentation on a topic of their choice. Rather than polished papers or formal lectures, presenters are encouraged to use the Exchange to develop emerging research projects or works in progress; discuss grant proposals or methodological questions; reflect on recent landmark publications, innovations, or policy developments; and explore ethical, legal, social, educational, or governance issues related to AI’s impact on specific sectors or populations.

Rotating Hosts serve as facilitators and logistical coordinators for one meeting per year. The host helps create a collegial, welcoming, and organized environment for both in-person and virtual participants. Host responsibilities include:

  1. Reserving, preparing, and cleaning up the meeting space for hybrid sessions.
  2. Setting up the Zoom link and managing the meeting by welcoming members.
  3. Moderating discussion and keeping the meeting on schedule.
  4. Archiving meeting resources to the shared drive.
