AI & Human Rights Index
Artificial intelligence has the potential to both violate and advance human rights. But what does that really mean? Which rights are at stake? How could they be compromised, and who bears the responsibility for protecting them?
The AI & Human Rights Index provides a comprehensive legal framework to answer these pressing questions. We categorize human rights and map them across societal sectors to show who must be held accountable for safeguarding those rights. The Index also connects these rights to specific human rights instruments and international laws, helping regulators determine whether violations are occurring.
Most importantly, we do not just focus on violations. The editors and contributors call on every sector to think beyond harm prevention, encouraging them to actively use AI throughout its lifecycle to advance human rights. In this way, we highlight not only the duty to “do no harm,” but the human obligation to “do good.” Together, we can ensure that AI protects and advances each of the following human rights.
